Madrid and Valencia have the same July temperature, if you choose the number carefully enough. In AEMET's 1981-2010 normals, their city observatories both report a monthly mean of 25.6°C, about 78°F. That tidy agreement conceals almost everything interesting about the comparison.
Madrid reaches higher daytime temperatures and lower overnight minima. Valencia compresses the summer temperature range, then carries warmth farther into autumn. By January, the coastal city is warmer at both ends of the day. The sea is not simply making Valencia cooler. It is changing when warmth arrives, how long it stays, and which part of the year feels generous.
The Afternoon Winner Loses the Overnight Comparison
Start with two named observatories, not two vague city averages: Madrid, Retiro, station 3195 at 667 metres, and Valencia's city observatory, station 8416 at 13 metres. These are urban park observatories, not the airports. Both tables use the same thirty years. The numbers below are monthly averages of daily highs and lows, not records or readings at a particular hour.

July's Madrid high is 2.4°C above Valencia's; its low is 2.5°C below. The resulting high-to-low span is 13.1°C inland against 8.2°C at the coastal city station. The equal monthly mean has hidden a substantial rearrangement of the heat.
That does not make Madrid's evening 19 degrees. A daily minimum is the bottom of a temperature cycle, often reached near dawn, not the temperature at dinner or bedtime. These tables establish a contrast between daytime peaks and overnight lows; they cannot tell us when the cities cross over. They also measure air temperature, not a complete comfort index.
Valencia's Summer Peaks Later
The calendar reveals a second difference. Madrid's warmest monthly mean is July's 25.6°C. Valencia's is August's 26.1°C. While the inland station is beginning its normal seasonal descent, the coastal station is still warming. That is a different proposition from a permanently cooler version of Madrid.
Water heats and cools more slowly than land. The National Weather Service's land-water explanation describes how this contrast can drive a daytime breeze from water toward warmer land. But a sea that warms reluctantly also gives up its warmth reluctantly. Proximity to water moderates temperature changes; it does not provide an unlimited supply of cold air.
AEMET climatologist Jose Angel Nunez Mora makes the local connection in his account of Mediterranean warm nights: under stable summer weather with a breeze regime, coastal mean air temperature tends to follow the sea, whose temperature normally peaks in the first half of August. That mechanism fits the later peak in Valencia's table. The table alone cannot isolate the sea's contribution from every other influence.
October shows what the delay can buy. Valencia's normal high is still 24.3°C, against Madrid's 19.4°C; its low is 15.2°C rather than 10.7°C. Someone who finds retained warmth tiring in August may welcome it in October. The same broad coastal influence can change from a drawback to an attraction without changing cities.
Winter Is Part of the Same Bargain
Madrid's setting matters as much as Valencia's shore. Retiro is 654 metres above the Valencia observatory. That is not a correction to subtract mechanically from one thermometer: the stations also differ in distance from the sea, surrounding terrain, and exposure. Madrid occupies the elevated interior, while Valencia sits close to sea level beside the Mediterranean.
The Spanish government's definition of continentality identifies a greater annual temperature range as a feature of places removed from maritime influence. The two records show it clearly. The warmest-to-coldest monthly-mean range is 19.3°C at Retiro and 14.3°C in Valencia. Inland, summer heat is paired with a much deeper winter retreat.
In January, Valencia's average high is 6.6°C above Madrid's and its low is 4.4°C above. Retiro averages 6.2 frost days during the month; Valencia's city station averages 0.3. Those are long-term frequencies, not a guarantee against a cold spell. But they describe a meaningful difference for someone who wants to spend the cool season outside: Valencia's advantage is not just a less severe afternoon in July.
There is a revealing complication. January's high-to-low span is only 7.1°C in Madrid, versus 9.3°C in Valencia: the opposite of July. A larger annual swing does not mean a larger daily swing in every month. The winter comparison is not simply the summer picture shifted down the thermometer.
Even the Sea Breeze Has a Season
AEMET's climate account of Valencia's March Fallas period describes a change in the circulation itself. Winds arriving from land are most frequent in winter; spring brings increasing Mediterranean influence, which lasts well into autumn. The coastal thermostat does not operate under one fixed wind pattern all year.
On stable March days with sea breezes, AEMET describes afternoon air moving over a still-cool Mediterranean, around 14°C in that seasonal context. Temperatures can level off near 20°C as the breeze develops. This is a conditional weather pattern, not a second normal period being mixed into our table.
The detail becomes more interesting at street scale. AEMET notes that maritime neighborhoods and open areas can feel the strengthening afternoon breeze, while central buildings can largely suppress the weaker flow. The sea can be close on a map without being equally present in every street. In March, an exposed coastal walk may feel unexpectedly cool; a sheltered central street need not deliver the same experience.
That is why "coastal" describes an influence, not a uniform microclimate. Wind direction and access to moving air matter alongside distance. The pleasant breeze remembered from one open promenade is not evidence about every inland block, nor does its springtime temperature describe the breeze in August.
The Airport Can Exaggerate the Story
Changing stations changes the apparent size of the summer bargain. In the same 1981-2010 period, Madrid airport has a July average low of 16.8°C, not Retiro's 19.0°C. Valencia airport, in the separate municipality of Manises, records 20.5°C, not the city station's 21.5°C.
Pair Madrid airport with Valencia city and the overnight gap becomes 4.7°C. Pair the two city observatories and it is 2.5°C. The direction survives, but a mixed-station comparison nearly doubles the contrast. Neither station is wrong; an unlabeled comparison is misleading.
Nor are the city stations pure measurements of geography. Valencia's observatory is in the Viveros park, which AEMET describes as having been absorbed into the city's heat island. Its warm-night analysis discusses both urban heat retention and broader warming. The older normals are a matched historical baseline, not a promise that today's summers will reproduce them. Nothing here estimates a bedroom temperature or a neighborhood cooling benefit.
Which Part of Mildness Matters?
The Madrid and Valencia comparison becomes more useful when "mild" is unpacked. Valencia offers lower midsummer average highs, higher overnight lows, a later summer peak, and a warmer cool season. Madrid offers a wider summer daily range and a more pronounced annual change. There is no temperature column that wins all four questions.
The choice is not simply whether you like the sea. It is whether you like what the sea does to the calendar. The warmth that lingers too long on an August night is related to the warmth that makes an October afternoon inviting. July's identical average hides that relationship. Living through January reveals it.
